Hadith 585

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding the prostration in Surah Sad: He said: It is the repentance of a servant or the repentance of a prophet. So Allah commanded Muhammad (peace be upon him) to follow him in this.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
The meaning of what Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma said is that the statement of Allah the Exalted: ﴿اُولٰٓئِكَ الَّذِیْنَ هَدَی اللّٰهُ فَبِهُدٰهُمُ اقْتَدِهْ﴾ (Al-An'am: 90) ... “They are those whom Allah has guided, so follow their guidance.” Therefore, we should also perform prostration (sajdah). As is clarified by another narration regarding the position of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that the prostration (sajdah) of Surah Sad is not obligatory. But I saw the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that he used to perform prostration in it. (Bukhari, no. 1069; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 1409)
