Hadith 560

With this same chain: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces a new thing into the religion or gives refuge to an innovator (one who introduces a new thing), upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people. Neither any voluntary act nor any obligatory act of his will be accepted.”

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
Definition of Bid‘ah: The literal meaning of bid‘ah is to invent or create something.
Technical (Shar‘i) definition: ... Every act which is performed in the religion for the purpose of attaining reward, for which there is no evidence for its validity from the Book of Allah, the Sunnah of the Messenger, or the practice of the Companions (radi Allahu anhum).

However, nowadays some people of little understanding say that the use of speakers, lights, vehicles, etc. is also bid‘ah, since these did not exist in the time of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Regarding this, Mawlana Ahmad Raza Khan sahib says:
Bid‘ah and misguidance is only that which is newly introduced into the religion, and worldly customs and habits cannot be ruled as bid‘ah. For example, wearing an angarkha (a type of garment), eating pilaf, dressing the groom, seating the bride in a palanquin—similarly, the recitation of sehra (wedding verses), which is not done considering it a religious act, nor is it done with the intention of reward, but rather, all these are performed as customs. Yes, if some extremely ignorant person considers it a religious act, then objection to his foolish understanding is correct. (Fatawa Razawiyyah: 23/320, Jamia Nizamia, Lahore)

From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that none of the actions of an innovator (mubtadi‘) are accepted. Sayyiduna Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad (rahimahullah) said: When you see an innovator coming, take another path (i.e., avoid him). None of the actions of an innovator are accepted by Allah, and whoever helps an innovator, it is as if he has helped in destroying the religion. (Khasa’is Ahl al-Sunnah: p. 22)

Imam Malik (rahimahullah) said: Whoever introduces a bid‘ah into Islam and considers it good, then it is as if he has accused Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) of betraying the message, because Allah says: “This day I have perfected for you your religion...” (al-Ma’idah: 3) “Today I have completed your religion for you.”

Therefore, whatever was not religion on that day (the day of the Farewell Pilgrimage), is not religion today either. (Kitab al-I‘tisam: p. 64)

In Bukhari and Muslim, it is narrated from Sayyidah ‘A’ishah (radi Allahu anha) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Whoever introduces into this matter of ours that which is not from it, it is rejected.”

And Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, does not accept the repentance of an innovator until he abandons the innovation. (See Hadith No. 397) And likewise, innovators will also be deprived of the Hawd al-Kawthar (the Pond of Abundance). (See Hadith No. 402)
