Hadith 559

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "Today I will hand over the flag to such a person who loves Allah and His Messenger." The narrator stated: So the noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) hoped to receive this (flag) (and they began to look to see who would get the flag). Then he (peace be upon him) said: "Where is Ali?" He (peace be upon him) was informed that his eye was hurting, so he (peace be upon him) called him and put saliva on his hand and applied it to his eye, then commanded him to go and fight. So Allah granted victory at his hand that day. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not feed his family wheat bread to their fill for three days.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ The aforementioned narration establishes the virtue of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu.
His name: Ali ibn Abu Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Abd Manaf. His kunyah: Abu al-Hasan. His mother’s name: Fatimah bint Asad ibn Hashim. Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu was raised and nurtured in the house of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and among the children, he was the first to embrace faith. After coming to Madinah al-Munawwarah, in the second year of Hijrah, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam honored Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu with his daughter’s hand in marriage. He was unable to participate in the Battle of Tabuk because the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam appointed him as his deputy and ordered him to remain in Madinah al-Munawwarah. In all other battles, he displayed remarkable feats. After the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu, Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu became the fourth caliph of the Muslims.
In the year 40 AH, in the blessed month of Ramadan, on a Friday, the Khariji ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Muljam attacked him, and after three days, he was martyred. His funeral prayer was led by Sayyiduna Hasan radi Allahu anhu.
Regarding Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Are you not pleased that your relation to me is like that of Harun to Musa alayhissalam?” (Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the Companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, No. 3706)
In another narration: ((ANTA MINNI WA ANA MINKA)) (Bukhari, Book of the Virtues of the Companions of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Chapter: The Merits of Ali ibn Abi Talib al-Qurashi al-Hashimi) “You are from me and I am from you.”
The incident mentioned in the above hadith pertains to the Battle of Khaybar, which took place in the seventh year after Hijrah. Khaybar is located to the north of Madinah al-Munawwarah and was a center of the Jews, with an abundance of date palms. The Jews residing there plotted to annihilate the Muslims and continuously engaged in their conspiracies until, in 7 AH, an attack was launched on this region. After several weeks, Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, granted victory to the Muslims at the hands of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu.
In the aforementioned narration, it is stated that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam applied his blessed saliva to the eyes of Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu, they were cured. This was a miracle of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and a proof of his prophethood.

➋ ... At the end of the mentioned hadith, it is stated: “He did not feed his family with wheat bread to their fill for three consecutive days.” From this, the asceticism (zuhd), contentment (istighna), and simple lifestyle of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam are established, because at that time wheat was very expensive in Arabia, and the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam mostly subsisted on dates and water.
