Hadith 554

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "People are like mines of gold and silver, those who were best in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance are the best in Islam as well, when they gain understanding (of the religion)."

Benefits:
The meaning of the aforementioned hadith is that the qualities which Allah, the Exalted, has placed within human beings remain intact in Islam as well, provided they are qualities of goodness. This is because Islam itself is a religion of nobility and honor; therefore, Islam does not abolish human qualities but rather redirects them, on the condition that, after accepting Islam, a person attains religious understanding. For when there is religious knowledge and comprehension of the religion, then their actions will have spirit, sincerity will also be present, they will understand the appropriate occasions for performing these deeds, and they will carry them out for the pleasure of Allah.
