Hadith 553

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "The best (era) among you is my era, then those who will come after them, and then those who will come after them." The narrator says: I do not know whether he mentioned the era a third time or not. He (peace be upon him) said: "Then there will come a people who will love obesity, they will bear witness while their testimony will not be sought."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
By "qarn" is meant the people of an era, that is, the people of a single generation. In the mentioned hadith, three eras are referenced: the first is the era of Prophethood or the era of the Companions (Sahabah), the second is the era of the Followers (Tabi‘in), and the third is the era of the Followers of the Followers (Taba‘ Tabi‘in). From this hadith, the greatness of the Companions, the Followers, and the Followers of the Followers is also established.

‘Allamah Suyuti rahimahullah states: The first era is that of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the Companions, which extends from the beginning of Prophethood until the death of the last Companion, that is, for one hundred and twenty years. Then the era of the Followers continued from 100 AH to 170 AH. Then the era of the Followers of the Followers continued until 220 AH. (Mirqat al-Mafatih: 10/360)

After these three eras, innovations (bid‘ah) began to appear, and people’s adherence to the religion started to decrease, and people introduced various kinds of innovations into the religion. The reality is that just as the first era was the most virtuous, then the second, then after that the third, after which good deeds continued to decrease and evils reached their peak, similarly, every succeeding era has turned out to be worse than the one before it.
