Hadith 543

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I brought some dates to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), arranged in my hand. I said, "O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah for blessing in them for me." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for blessing in them for me, then said: "When you want to take some (dates), put your hand in and do not scatter them." Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I gave so many wasqs (large measures) of those dates in the way of Allah. He narrated: We used to eat from them and feed others, and they remained in my cloth until the days of the martyrdom of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), when they finished.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ ... In some narrations, it is mentioned that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu said: Three calamities in Islam have been the hardest for me: (1) The passing of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. (2) The martyrdom of Sayyiduna Uthman radi Allahu anhu. (3) The loss of the provision bag.

People asked: What is the provision bag? Then Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu explained the details of the provision bag. In some narrations, it is mentioned that I gave fifty wasq in charity in the path of Allah, and in some narrations, it is mentioned that there were twenty-one dates. From this, the miracle of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is established, that Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, placed blessing (barakah) in a few dates.

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas'ud radi Allahu anhu narrates that we used to consider miracles as a source of blessing, whereas you people are afraid of them.

Once, we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the water was nearly finished. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Whatever water is left, search for it." So the people brought a little water in a vessel. He put his hand in the vessel and said: "Take the blessed water, and blessing is only from Allah, the Exalted." I saw that water was gushing forth from between the fingers of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam like a fountain. (Bukhari, no. 3579)

It is thus known that one must have faith in miracles and should not deny them, because they occur at the hands of the Prophet by the permission of Allah.

➋ ... A wasq is sixty sa'. And the weight of one sa' is two and three-quarters seer. And one wasq is four maund and five seer.
