Hadith 524

Sayyida Rubayyi' bint Mu'awwidh bin 'Afra' (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: We used to participate in battles with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and we would give water to (the fighters) and serve them, and we would transport the martyrs and the wounded to Madinah.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that women may participate in jihad as needed. However, it is also necessary for women to observe the rules of veiling (purdah) in the presence of their husbands or mahram (unmarriageable kin). Unfortunately, some people, by reasoning from a few such incidents from the Prophetic era, continue to encourage women towards jihad even today, and even consider the mixing of men and women to be permissible. However, this reasoning is baseless and incorrect, because the few elderly women or young women who observed proper veiling—who were mothers, sisters, etc. of the mujahideen—would tend to the wounded and give them water. These were not situations where any display of immodesty could occur, nor was there any fear of seclusion (khalwah) with a non-mahram. Therefore, to infer the permissibility of a mixed system from this is absolutely incorrect.

Jihad is not obligatory upon women. As narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha: I asked the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam for permission to participate in jihad, and he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "The jihad of women is to perform Hajj."
