Hadith 523

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: Rifaa’ah bin Zaid Al-Judhami (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a slave to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he set out with him towards Khaybar. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned from Khaybar, he stayed in the valley of ‘Ashiyyah between ‘Asr and Maghrib. That slave stood up and began to unload the saddle from the riding animal of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when suddenly an arrow came from an unknown direction and struck him, and he was killed. We said: “Congratulations to you for Paradise!” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Never! By the One in Whose hand is my soul! The cloak which he stole from the spoils of the Muslims at the time of the battle of Khaybar is now burning upon him as a flame of fire.” The narrator said: One of your companions came in a state of fear and said: “O Messenger of Allah! I had picked up two straps of shoes.” So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “For both of them, two similar things will be prepared for you in Hell.”

Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that it is not permissible to declare anyone definitively as a person of Paradise, except for those whom the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has given glad tidings of Paradise. Apart from them, having good opinion (husn al-zann) about someone is correct, but it is not permissible to declare anyone definitively as a person of Paradise. It is also understood that corruption is a major sin (kabirah), such a sin that becomes a cause for entering Hellfire.

In another hadith, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd ibn Khalid al-Juhani (radi Allahu anhu) that on the day of Khaybar, one of the companions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away. The people informed the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) about him, so he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “You people perform the funeral prayer of your companion.” At this, the faces of the people turned pale. He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Your companion committed treachery (or theft) while in the path of Allah.” We searched his belongings and found in them some coral beads which the Jews used. Their value was not even two dirhams. (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 2710) It is understood from this that even a small theft from the public treasury is more serious than a large theft from private property. Therefore, those who today consider public wealth as free for the taking and commit corruption should take a lesson from this.
