Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that no matter how great a deed may be, if there is no sincerity (ikhlas) in that deed, it is not acceptable to Allah, the Possessor of Majesty. Instead of reward, it leads to Hell, because partnership (shirk) is not liked by Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, and if it is worship, then it must be free from every kind of shirk and ostentation (riya), and purely for Allah, as the statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“…And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.”
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu that I heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: “Allah, the Exalted, says: I am the most free from need of partners among those who are associated with Me. Whoever does a deed in which he associates someone else with Me, I abandon him and his shirk.” (Muslim, Kitab al-Zuhd, no. 2985)
In the aforementioned hadith, ostentation (riya) is described as shirk. This is minor shirk (shirk asghar). As the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “I fear minor shirk for you the most.” It was asked: “O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! What is that?” He said: “No matter how beautiful a deed is, if there is ostentation (riya), it is ruined,” as the statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“O you who believe! Do not nullify your charities with reminders [of your generosity] and injury, like the one who spends his wealth to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allah and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [smooth] stone upon which is dust and it is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the disbelieving people… etc.”
But if a deed is done with sincerity (ikhlas), then Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, gives its reward. As is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu, indeed the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, whatever you spend, seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah, you will be rewarded for it, even for what you put in your wife’s mouth (as a morsel).” (Bukhari, no. 56)
