Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Allah guarantees the person who goes out in His path for jihad, believing in Allah and affirming His messengers, that Allah will admit him to Paradise, or if He returns him, He will return him with reward and spoils of war. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Whoever is wounded in the path of Allah, he will come on the Day of Resurrection with the color of blood, but its fragrance will be the fragrance of musk. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! If I did not find it hard upon the Muslims, I would never stay behind any expedition fighting in the path of Allah, but I do not find the means to provide them with mounts, nor do they find the means, and it is hard upon them that they do not go out with me. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! I wish that I fight in the path of Allah and am martyred, then fight and am martyred, then fight and am martyred."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ ... From the mentioned hadith, the virtue of those who perform jihad is established, provided that their jihad is for the sake of the pleasure of Allah Dhul-Jalal. For such fortunate people, Allah Dhul-Jalal has taken two responsibilities: if he is martyred, he will enter Paradise and will also be saved from reckoning. If he returns as a victorious fighter (ghazi), he will return with full reward and recompense, as well as with the spoils of war (maal-e-ghanīmah).

➋ ... It is understood that on the Day of Resurrection, the mujahideen will be raised in a wounded state and will reach the court of Allah Dhul-Jalal in that very wounded condition, while blood will be flowing from their bodies.

➌ ... From the mentioned hadith, it is known that in some circumstances jihad is a communal obligation (fard kifayah), so in such a case, those who do not participate in jihad are not considered criminals in the sight of Allah. From the mentioned hadith, the passion for following the Messenger that existed in the hearts of the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) is also established. And the compassion and mercy of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is also affirmed. It is also understood that a leader should be mindful of the emotions of his subjects.

➍ ... From the mentioned hadith, it is also established that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had a desire for jihad, as he repeatedly expressed the wish to be martyred in the path of Allah Dhul-Jalal. It is understood that a permissible wish for something impossible is itself permissible.

From the mentioned narration, the status and virtue of martyrdom (shahadah) is also established, as the Exalted Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself expressed the desire for martyrdom.
