Hadith 50

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "The truest statement that the Arabs have spoken is the statement of Labid (the poet): Listen! Everything except Allah is false (perishable)." Umayyah bin Abi Salt was close to accepting Islam.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned ahadith, it is understood that composing and listening to good poetry is permissible. Labid was a famous and well-known Arab poet who became Muslim. Umayyah bin Abi Salt was a non-Muslim poet, yet his poetry was liked by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). It is thus understood that if good poetry is recited by a non-Muslim, listening to it is permissible. However, if bad poetry is recited even by a Muslim, listening to it is not permissible. Among the above-mentioned verses of poetry is ((Ala kullu shay’in ma khala Allah batil)), which is the statement of Allah the Exalted:

﴿Kullu man alayha fanin() wa yabqa wajhu rabbika dhu al-jalali wa al-ikram﴾ (Ar-Rahman: 26-27)
"Everyone upon the earth will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor."
This is its interpretation.
