Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: ‘Umra: Derived from ‘umr (life), meaning that thing which is given for the duration of a lifetime. This name was given because, in the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah), when a man would give a house to another, he would say: “I have made this house permissible for you for the duration of your life and lifetime,” then it would be said: “This is ‘umra for so-and-so.” (Al-Munjid: p. 582; Nayl al-Awtar: 4/74)
The scholars have described three forms of ‘umra: First, to give something as a gift absolutely for the duration of a lifetime. Second, to give the thing being gifted on the condition of the recipient’s life. Third, to say: “This is for you and after you, for your heirs.” The third form is the position of the majority (jumhur). (Fath al-Bari: 5/282) And this position is also established from the aforementioned hadith, and the meaning of the word “jā’izah” is both past and continuous, i.e., after death, the children of the recipient (muhub lahu) will inherit it, even if the children are not mentioned, as is established from the aforementioned hadith. The position of the majority appears to be preferable based on the evidences.
