Hadith 436

Muawiyah al-Mahdi narrated, Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me: O Mahdi! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the earnings of the cupper, the price of a dog, the earnings of the flute player’s profession, and the earnings from mating a bull.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that cupping (hijama), taking the price of a dog, earning money by playing the flute, and taking money for the mating of a bull are not permissible.

➊ ... It is prohibited to take money for performing cupping. However, in Sahih al-Bukhari, it is narrated that Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik radi Allahu anhu stated that Abu Taybah radi Allahu anhu performed cupping (hijama) on the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so he (the Prophet) ordered that a sa‘ (measure) of dates be given to him as a wage. (Bukhari, no. 2102)
From this, it is understood that taking a wage for performing cupping is permissible, because if it were not permissible, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not have given it to Abu Taybah radi Allahu anhu. The reason for the prohibition is that taking it without necessity is not permissible.

➋ ... It is understood that taking the price of a dog is not permissible. It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam prohibited the price of every dog except a hunting dog. (Sahih al-Nasa’i, no. 4353)
Imam Shawkani rahimahullah says: If the hadith with the exception (of the hunting dog) is considered authoritative, then this hadith will be interpreted in an unrestricted manner, and it will be said: The trade of all dogs except the hunting dog is unlawful. (Nayl al-Awtar: 3/512)

➌ ... It is understood that the earnings of one who plays the flute are unlawful, because the flute and all musical instruments are not permissible in the religion of Islam, therefore the income obtained through them is also not permissible.

➍ ... It is understood that taking compensation in exchange for the mating of any male animal is also not permissible. The majority of scholars hold this view, but Imam Malik rahimahullah’s position is that it is permissible to give a male animal on hire for mating for a known period.
The view of the majority is the preferred one. (Nayl al-Awtar: 3/515)
