Lady Umm Hani (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: On the day of the conquest of Makkah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to our house, so I presented a drink to him, or it was presented to him, and he drank it. Then he handed it to me. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am fasting. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who keeps a voluntary fast is his own master (ruler); if you wish, complete your fast, and if you wish, break it."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that a person may break a voluntary (nafl) fast whenever he wishes. In Sahih Muslim, it is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha that one day the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to me and said: "Do you have anything (to eat)?" We said: No. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Then I am fasting." Then, on another day, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam came to us and I said: O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! We have been given some halwa (sweet) as a gift. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "Show it to me, for I began the morning in a state of fasting." Then he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ate (the halwa). (Muslim, Kitab al-Siyam, no. 1154; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 2455)
