Abu al-Tufail (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): The people of your tribe say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ramal and that it is a Sunnah. He replied: They have spoken the truth and they have lied. I asked: What is it that they have spoken the truth about and what is it that they have lied about? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ramal because the Quraysh said: Leave them until they die in the same cave in which they have been besieged. So when the next year came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Makkah while the polytheists were on the side of Qaiqan (mountain). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them to perform ramal (walk briskly with shoulders moving) in three circuits of the House (Ka'bah), so they performed ramal up to the Rukn, and this is not a Sunnah. I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them): The people of your tribe say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed sa'i between Safa and Marwah on a camel and that it is a Sunnah. He replied: They have spoken the truth and have said something incorrect, because when the rites of Hajj were explained to Ibrahim (peace be upon him), Satan confronted him at seven places. So he competed with him, but Ibrahim (peace be upon him) outpaced him, and Jibril (peace be upon him) took him to the Jamrah, where Satan confronted him, so he pelted him with seven pebbles, and he went away. Then he came between the Jamrah and the middle Jamrah, so he pelted him with seven pebbles, and he went away. Then he laid Ismail (peace be upon him) down on his forehead, and there was a white cloth on him, because besides that garment, there was no other cloth that would suffice him. So he said: Take it off me so that you may wrap me in it. While they were taking it off, a voice called out: "O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the vision. Thus do We reward the doers of good." Suddenly, they saw there a white ram with big eyes and horns, so he slaughtered it. Then he went to the Jamrah al-Quswa and pelted it with seven pebbles. Then he brought them to Mina and said: This is the place for people to make their camels kneel. Then he brought them to Muzdalifah and said: This is the Sacred Monument (Mash'ar al-Haram). Then he brought them to Arafat and said: Do you know why it is called 'Arafah (Arafat)? Then he said: Do you know how the Talbiyah was? Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to proclaim Hajj among the people. The settlements were raised for them and the mountains were lowered with their peaks, so he proclaimed Hajj among the people.
