It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "My father is an old man; can I perform Hajj on his behalf?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me, if he had a debt, would you pay it off for him?" He replied: "Yes!" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then perform Hajj on his behalf."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that a person can perform Hajj on behalf of a living individual, when that individual possesses the means for travel expenses, but due to old age or some other incapacity is unable to perform Hajj himself. However, the condition for this is that the one performing Hajj on his behalf must have already performed Hajj for himself. As narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam heard a man saying, “Labbaik on behalf of Shubrumah.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam asked, “Who is Shubrumah?” He replied, “My brother or (he said) my close relative.” The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “Have you performed Hajj for yourself?” He replied, “No.” So the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said, “First perform Hajj for yourself, then perform Hajj on behalf of Shubrumah.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 1811. Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 2903)
