Hadith 359

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions came to perform Hajj, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O people! End your state of Ihram, except for the one who has a sacrificial animal with him. If I had known what I know now, I would not have done this. Umrah has been incorporated into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
There are three types of Hajj: (1)... Hajj Tamattu‘. (2)... Hajj Qiran. (3)... Hajj Ifrad.

➊ Hajj Tamattu‘ refers to entering Makkah during the months of Hajj in the state of ihram (ritual consecration) for ‘umrah, performing ‘umrah, then exiting the state of ihram and remaining in a non-sacred state until the days of Hajj, during which Hajj is performed. In this type, offering a sacrifice is obligatory.

➋ Hajj Qiran refers to assuming ihram for both ‘umrah and Hajj from the miqat (designated station), then upon reaching Makkah, performing ‘umrah, but after the sa‘i (ritual walking), neither shaving/cutting the hair nor exiting the state of ihram. Rather, one remains in the state of ihram and completes all the rites of Hajj in that state. For the one performing Hajj Qiran, offering a sacrifice is obligatory, and whoever is unable to offer a sacrifice must fast ten days. It is better to bring the sacrificial animal along, as this is the Sunnah method. In this type, three circumambulations (tawaf) are necessary: tawaf of ‘umrah, tawaf of Hajj, and tawaf of farewell (tawaf al-wada‘), and two sa‘i: sa‘i of ‘umrah and sa‘i of Hajj.

➌ Hajj Ifrad refers to the single Hajj. Hajj Ifrad is to assume ihram from the miqat solely for Hajj and to perform all the rites of Hajj. As for the single ‘umrah, it is to assume ihram from the miqat solely for ‘umrah and to complete all the acts of ‘umrah. In this type, offering a sacrifice is not obligatory. Although the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed Hajj Qiran, he expressed the desire for Hajj Tamattu‘. The position of Imam Malik and Imam Ahmad rahimahumullah is that Hajj Tamattu‘ is superior. (Fath al-Bari: 4/216; Kitab al-Umm: 2/312; al-Mughni: 5/82)

The same position is held by Allamah Shawkani rahimahullah, that Hajj Tamattu‘ is superior. (Nayl al-Awtar: 3/317)

The same position is also held by Mawlana Siddiq Hasan Khan rahimahullah, that Hajj Tamattu‘ is superior. (al-Rawdah al-Nadiyyah: 1/594)

It is also understood from this that performing ‘umrah during the months of Hajj is permissible. Its explanation has already passed above.
