Hadith 335

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed raml (walking briskly) while circumambulating the House of Allah and while performing sa’i between Safa and Marwah, so that the polytheists could see him, because the polytheists had said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions have become weak (and the climate of Madinah has made them weak). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed raml, in order to show them his strength.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
It is understood from the aforementioned hadith that one should run between Safa and Marwah. Although at that time it was done to show the polytheists of Makkah, now that situation no longer exists, yet even so, one should not abandon this act while following the Sunnah. However, if someone is unable to run due to old age or illness, then there is no harm in it. As Sayyiduna Kathir bin Jumhan Salami radi Allahu anhu says: I saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhuma walking at a normal pace between Safa and Marwah, so I asked: Why are you walking at a normal pace between Safa and Marwah? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar radi Allahu anhuma replied: If I run, (that is also correct because) I saw the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam running, and if I walk at a normal pace, (that is also correct because) I saw the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam walking at a normal pace as well, and I am an old man (therefore I am walking at a normal pace).
