Hadith 33

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one day said to his noble companions: “Ask me.” So they were afraid to ask him anything. Then a man came and placed his hands on the Prophet’s knees and said: “O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! Tell me about faith.” The narrator then mentioned the hadith similar to the previous one, and added: “And that you believe in being raised after death, and that you believe in every kind of destiny.” And whatever he would ask you, he would say: “You have spoken the truth.” And the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When you see the naked, barefoot, deaf, and dumb (like animals) people becoming the owners of the land (country), and you see the shepherds of livestock boasting with one another in construction.” In this hadith it is stated: “That you fear Allah as if you see Him.” And in the hadith it is stated: “This is Jibreel.” Abu Zur’ah narrated: He wished that they be taught to ask him questions.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the mentioned hadith, the etiquettes of asking scholars about religious issues are understood.

➊ The issue should be asked while sitting close by.

➋ It is understood that it is permissible for teachers or leaders to have a distinguished place among others.

➌ It is understood that a student’s clothing should be clean and tidy, and he should sit before his teacher with humility.

➍ When our master Jibril (alayhis salam) asked about Islam, the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informed him about the outward matters, and when he asked about iman (faith), the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informed him about the inward matters. When the words Islam and iman are mentioned together, there is a difference in their meanings. Since (Islam and iman) are mentioned together here, the explanation of Islam is given with outward matters, and this is appropriate to the meaning of Islam. Islam is the name of submitting and surrendering to Allah and obedience to Him. The explanation of iman is given with inward matters, and this is appropriate to its meaning. (Iman means) affirmation and acknowledgment with the heart, tongue, and actions. When Islam and iman are mentioned separately, then outward and inward matters are intended in their meanings.

The separate mention of Islam is in this statement of Allah, the Exalted:
“Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam, it will never be accepted from him, and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.”

The separate mention of iman is in this verse:
“Whoever disbelieves after having faith, all his deeds will be nullified, and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.”

➎ Ihsan: ... Al-Imam Ibn Rajab rahimahullah, in the explanation of ihsan, while quoting the blessed statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam):
“You worship Allah as if you see Him.”
He states that in this there is an indication that the (person of ihsan) worships Allah with this quality, and this is the presence (awareness) of His nearness, and that he is before Him as if he is seeing Him. This produces awe, fear, reverence, and veneration. As has come in the narration reported by our master Abu Hurairah (radi Allahu anhu) «اَنْ تَخشَي اللهَ كَانَّكَ تَراهٔ» “You fear Allah as if you see Him.” And from this it is also necessary that in worship, sincerity, striving for its perfection, completion, and fulfillment should be done with full effort.

➏ Knowledge of the Hour... No one possesses it except Allah. Allah, the Exalted, says:
“Indeed, the knowledge of the Hour is with Allah.”

Allah, the Exalted, says:
“They ask you about the Hour, when will it come? Say: Its knowledge is only with my Lord.”

Knowledge about the Hour is with Allah, the Possessor of Majesty, but the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) has informed us of some of its signs, and likewise, he has informed us that it will come on a Friday, but he did not inform us in which month or which year it will come. In the above-mentioned hadith, two signs are mentioned.

➐ Barefoot, naked, poor shepherds will boast in (lofty) buildings. The meaning is that poor people who used to herd goats and had nothing to wear, their conditions will change, they will settle in cities and boast (and show arrogance) in (large) mansions.

➑ The slave-girl will give birth to her master: The meaning is that there will be many conquests and many slaves will be made. Among some slave-girls, there will be those with whom their master will have relations, and they will have children. That slave-girl will become umm walad (mother of a child), and her children will be in the position of their master. As history testifies, many great leaders were from the children of slave-girls, or the children will disobey their mothers and overpower them, to the extent that the children will reach such a position as if they are the masters of their parents.
