Hadith 329

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "The circumambulation of the House of Allah is like prayer, except that you can talk during it, so speak only good and virtuous words."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that circumambulation (tawaf) of the House of Allah is like prayer (salah). For example: just as ablution (wudu) is a condition for prayer, it is also a condition for tawaf, as narrated from Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed ablution and then circumambulated the House of Allah. (Bukhari, no. 1641, 1642)

This is the position of Imam Ahmad, Imam Malik, and Imam Shafi'i rahimahumullah. (See: Al-Mughni: 5/223)

Speaking during prayer is prohibited. However, the Shariah has granted concession to those performing tawaf to speak. Therefore, if one does speak, it should be good speech, and that too only when necessary, not excessive conversation, as is mentioned in Sunan Nasa'i: ((Al-tawafu bil-bayti salahun fa aqillu minal kalam.)) ... "Circumambulation of the House of Allah is like prayer, so speak as little as possible during tawaf."
