Hadith 326

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Hatim is a part of the House of Allah, because Allah Almighty has said: "Perform Tawaf of the Ancient House." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed Tawaf from outside the Hatim.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
The Hatim is a part of the Sacred House (Bayt Allah). When the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was 35 years old, five years before prophethood, the Quraysh of Makkah rebuilt the Sacred House, but they were unable to construct the portion of the Hatim (five cubits), because they had run out of funds. After the conquest of Makkah, Lady Aisha (radi Allahu anha) relates that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to her: "If your people had not only recently abandoned disbelief, I would have rebuilt the Ka'bah upon the foundations of Ibrahim, for the Quraysh had made the Ka'bah smaller. I would have also made a door at the back." (Muslim, Book of Hajj, No: 1333)

When the era of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (radi Allahu anhuma) came, he said: Now we have the funds and we do not fear anyone. Then Ibn al-Zubayr (radi Allahu anhuma) extended the wall by five cubits towards the Hatim. Through excavation, the foundations of Ibrahim became visible, and the people saw these foundations clearly. Then the Ka'bah was built upon these very foundations, and two doors were made. (Muslim, Book of Hajj, No: 1333)

After the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr (radi Allahu anhuma), Hajjaj ibn Yusuf wrote to Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan that Ibn al-Zubayr had built the Sacred House upon the foundations of Ibrahim, and the reputable people of Makkah had seen these foundations. Abd al-Malik replied that we have no need for the additions of Ibn al-Zubayr (radi Allahu anhuma). Remove the extension towards the Hatim and rebuild the Ka'bah in its former state, and also close the door. (Muslim, Book of Hajj, No: 1333)

He demolished it and rebuilt it as the Quraysh of Makkah had done, leaving out the Hatim. It is mentioned in the books of history that when the Caliph Harun al-Rashid wished to demolish and rebuild it in his time, Imam Malik (rahimahullah) forbade him, saying: Every new ruler will continue to do the same. Now, the current Sacred House is upon the foundations of the Quraysh of Makkah, and whoever performs tawaf should do so leaving out the Hatim.
