Narrated by Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them): The people, after completing the rites of Hajj, would return (to their respective homelands and regions) from every direction. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them: "That their last act should be (to spend time in) circumambulation at the House of Allah (the Ka'bah)."

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits: From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that performing the farewell circumambulation (tawaf al-wada‘) is necessary, and one should strive that when departing from Makkah al-Mu‘azzamah—whether returning to one’s homeland or going to Madinah al-Munawwarah—this tawaf should be performed at that time, and only after it should the journey commence. According to the majority (jumhur), performing the farewell circumambulation is obligatory (wajib); if one does not perform the farewell circumambulation, then a compensatory sacrifice (dam) becomes obligatory.
