Encouragement for women to give charity
Hadith 298
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، نا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو وَهُوَ ابْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ الْمُصْطَلِقِ , عَنِ ابْنِ أَخِي زَيْنَبَ امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ , عَنْ زَيْنَبَ امْرَأَةِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ قَالَتْ: خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَحَثَّنَا عَلَى الصَّدَقَةِ، فَقَالَ: ((يَا مَعْشَرَ النِّسَاءِ، تَصَدَّقْنَ وَلَوْ مِنْ حُلِيِّكُنَّ، فَإِنَّكُنَّ مِنْ أَكْثَرِ جَهَنَّمَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ)) قَالَتْ: وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ خَفِيفَ ذَاتِ الْيَدَيْنِ، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُلْقِيَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْمَهَابَةُ، فَقُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ: سَلْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الصَّدَقَةِ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِنَا وَيَتَامَى فِي حُجُورِنَا، فَقَالَ: لَا بَلْ سَلِيهِ أَنْتِ، فَانْطَلَقْتُ إِلَى الْبَابِ، فَإِذَا امْرَأَةٌ مِنَ الْأَنْصَارِ حَاجَتُهَا مِثْلُ حَاجَتِي، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْنَا بِلَالٌ، فَقُلْنَا لَهُ: سَلْ لَنَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَيُجْزِئُ عَنَّا مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِنَا وَيَتَامَى فِي حُجُورِنَا؟ فَدَخَلَ بِلَالٌ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ((مَنْ بِالْبَابِ؟)) فَقَالَ: زَيْنَبُ امْرَأَةُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ , وَامْرَأَةٌ أُخْرَى تَسْأَلَانِكَ: أَتُجْزِئُ عَنْهُمَا مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ الصَّدَقَةُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمَا وَيَتَامَى فِي حُجُورِهِمَا؟ فَقَالَ: ((فِيهِمَا أَجْرُ الصَّدَقَةِ وَأَجْرُ الْقَرَابَةِ)).
The wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), Zainab (may Allah be pleased with her), narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us and encouraged us to give charity. He said: “O group of women, give charity, even if it is from your jewelry, for on the Day of Resurrection, the majority of the inhabitants of Hell will be from among you.” She narrated: Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) had little wealth, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a person of awe-inspiring presence. I said to Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about giving charity to our husbands and to the orphan children under our care. He said: No, rather you yourself ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So I went to the door and saw a woman from the Ansar there; she had the same issue as I did. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us, so we said to him: Ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for us whether giving charity to our husbands and to the orphan children under our care will suffice for us. Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) went inside, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Who is at the door?” He replied: Zainab, the wife of Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and another woman; they are asking you about an issue: Will giving charity to their husbands and to the orphan children under their care suffice for them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “For both of them, there is a double reward for giving charity and for maintaining kinship ties.”
