Sayyida Asma bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I came with my maternal aunt, who was a newlywed bride, to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) so that we could pledge allegiance to you. You saw that she was wearing two gold bangles and rings, so you said to her: "Do you like that Allah should make you wear bracelets of fire and brand you with rings of fire?" So she immediately took them off and threw them away; it is not known who picked them up. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Could not one of you make two silver earrings and then color them with ambergris, wars, or saffron?"
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated: “Do you like that you be made to wear bracelets of fire?” This applies when zakat is not given. As it is narrated that a woman came to the service of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), accompanied by her daughter. Her daughter had two gold bracelets on her hands. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) asked her, “Do you give zakat on these?” She replied, “No.” The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “Do you like that on the Day of Resurrection Allah will make you wear two bracelets of fire in exchange for these?” Upon hearing this, the woman threw both bracelets away. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Zakat: 1563)
From this, it is also understood that zakat must be paid on jewelry. If zakat is not paid, this act becomes a cause for Allah’s punishment.
The statement of Allah, the Exalted, is:
“And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of Allah, give them tidings of a painful punishment. On the Day when it will be heated in the Fire of Hell and their foreheads, their sides, and their backs will be branded with it (it will be said to them): This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard.”
