Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The meaning of the aforementioned hadith is that the one who collects zakat should not demand more than the amount of zakat that is due, and instead of taking animals of average quality, he should not demand the best animals. If the collector does so, he is sinful just as the one who does not pay zakat is sinful, because due to his excessiveness, people may refuse to give zakat.
Just as in the present era, people refuse to pay taxes; the reason is that the officials act unjustly. If the one collecting charity and zakat does not act excessively, then regarding such people, it is mentioned in the hadith: Sayyiduna Rafi‘ bin Khadij radi Allahu anhu heard the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam say: “The one who collects charity rightfully is like a mujahid in the path of Allah who returns home.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 2936. Its chain is hasan)
