Hadith 272

Abu Ma'bad narrated: Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) led the funeral prayer, then said Allahu Akbar, then recited Surah Al-Fatihah and recited it aloud, then after that said three takbirs, and said: I recited aloud so that you may know that this is the Sunnah.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari from Sayyiduna Talhah bin Abdullah bin Awf, who states: I offered the funeral prayer behind Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma, and he recited Surah al-Fatihah, then said: ((LITA‘LAMU ANNAHA SUNNAH)) “You should know that this is Sunnah.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Jana’iz, no. 1335)
And when a Companion refers to an action as Sunnah, it carries the meaning of a marfu‘ (attributed) hadith. In al-Nasa’i Sharif, it is stated: ((FAQARA’A BIFĀTIHATIL KITĀB WA SŪRATIN WA JAHARA FALAMMA FARAGHA QĀLA SUNNAH WA HAQQUN.)) (Sunan al-Nasa’i, no. 1978; Ahkam al-Jana’iz by al-Albani, p. 151) ... “Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma recited al-Fatihah and a surah (in the funeral prayer) and recited aloud, then when he finished, he said: This is Sunnah and truth.”
It is thus understood that reciting Surah al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer is also obligatory, just as it is obligatory to recite it in other prayers. Because the hadith ((LĀ SALĀTA LIMAN LAM YAQRA’ BIFĀTIHATIL KITĀB)) “There is no prayer for the one who does not recite al-Fatihah” includes every prayer.
In the narration of Sunan Ibn Majah, Sayyidah Umm Sharik al-Ansariyyah radi Allahu anha states that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam commanded us to recite Surah al-Fatihah in the funeral prayer. (Sunan Ibn Majah: 1496) Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai rahimahullah has graded this narration as hasan. It is also understood that reciting the funeral prayer aloud is Sunnah, and this is also established from the hadith in which Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik radi Allahu anhu states: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam led the funeral prayer, so we memorized the supplication he recited (in the funeral prayer). (Muslim: 963; Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 1500)
