Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Among the things we were pledged upon was that we would not wail (over the dead). Only five women among us fulfilled this: Umm Sulaym, the wife of Mu‘adh bin Abi Sabrah (may Allah be pleased with him), or the wife of Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him), the daughter of Abu Sabrah, and another woman. And she was not prepared for it until the day of Harrah, when the women participated in it until she stood up; they would not prepare themselves for it.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to take the pledge (bay‘ah) from women verbally. In the lengthy hadith of Umaymah bint Ruqayqah radi Allahu anha, it is mentioned... We said: O Messenger of Allah, allow us to pledge allegiance upon your blessed hand. He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “I do not shake hands with women.” (Nasai, Kitab al-Bay‘ah, Bab Bay‘at al-Nisa: 4183) Who were those five women? Umm Sulaym, Umm al-‘Ala’, the daughter of Abi Sabrah, the wife of Mu‘adh, and another woman. It is thus understood that in times of calamity or disaster, or at the time of someone’s death, wailing, lamenting, screaming, tearing one’s collar, and pulling out hair, etc., are prohibited. There are stern warnings in the hadiths for those who do such acts. However, if tears flow naturally due to grief, there is no prohibition against that. The prohibition is only for such weeping in which there is wailing. As is mentioned in the hadith: Sayyiduna Anas radi Allahu anhu narrates that I was present at the burial of one of the daughters of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was sitting by the grave, and I saw that both his eyes were filled with tears. (Bukhari, no. 1286; Muslim, no. 928)
