Lady Umm ‘Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us while we were washing his daughter, so he said: “Wash her three times, or five times, or more than that if you feel it is necessary, and in the last washing add camphor or a little camphor to the water. And when you have finished, inform me.” So when we finished, we informed him, and he threw his waist-wrapper towards us and said: “Wrap her body with it.”

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: ➊ From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that if the deceased is a woman, then a woman should give her the ritual bath (ghusl), and if the deceased is a man, then a man should give him the ritual bath. However, a woman may give her husband the ritual bath, and a husband may give his wife the ritual bath, as Sayyiduna Ali radi Allahu anhu gave Sayyidah Fatimah radi Allahu anha the ritual bath. (Sunan Dar Qutni: 2/79; Bayhaqi: 3/396) And Sayyiduna Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu was given the ritual bath by his wife Sayyidah Asma radi Allahu anha. (Bayhaqi: 3/397) Sayyidah Aisha radi Allahu anha narrates that she said: If I had known beforehand what I came to know later, then only the purified wives would have given the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam the ritual bath. (Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 1464)
➋ From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that the ritual bath should be given three times; if it is to be given five times or more, then it should be an odd number. As is stated in Sahih Bukhari: ((ثَلَاثًااَوْخَمْسًااَوْسَبْعًا)) and ((اِغْسِلْنَهَاوِتْرًا))... "Three or five or seven times." (Bukhari, no. 1254)
➌ It is understood that the minimum is three times, and as many times as needed may be done, but it should be an odd number. And in the last time that water is poured over the body of the deceased, camphor should be added, because the fragrance of camphor keeps insects away. Imam Shawkani rahimahullah says: The wisdom in applying camphor to the deceased is that angels are present at the burial, and especially the command for camphor is because whatever it is used in does not change quickly, and another benefit mentioned is that after applying it, no harmful creature comes near the deceased. (Nayl al-Awtar: 2/682)
➍ In the hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((بِمَاءٍوَسِدْرٍ))... "With water and lotus leaves (sidr)." (Sahih Bukhari, no. 1254) If the lotus leaves are boiled in water and the deceased is given the ritual bath with that water, cleanliness is better achieved. In today's era, soap may also be used.
