Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A man passed away and his good qualities were mentioned, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory." Then another man passed away and his bad qualities were mentioned, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It has become obligatory." Some people were surprised at this and asked: O Messenger of Allah! What has become obligatory? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are witnesses over one another."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, the virtue of the Ummah of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is established: those whom they consider good, Allah Almighty also considers them good, and those whom they consider bad, Allah Almighty also considers them bad. It is also understood that mentioning the good deeds of the deceased and remembering them with good words is better.
It is also understood that a person who is to die should adopt good character in his life and strive to be of benefit to people, so that after his death, people remember him with good words.
Sayyiduna Yazid bin Shajarah (radi Allahu anhu) says: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went out with a funeral procession. The people spoke good words about the deceased and praised him. At that moment, Jibril Amin (alayhis salam) came and said: This man was not as the people are saying. Nevertheless, you are Allah’s witnesses on earth, so (in view of your testimony) Allah forgave even those sins of his which these people did not know about. (Silsilat al-Sahihah, no. 1312)
