Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
Imam Muhammad bin Yazid bin Majah rahimahullah has narrated this narration under the chapter “Bāb Mā Jā’a Fī Ziyārat Qubūr al-Mushrikīn”... “Visiting the graves of the polytheists.” It is understood from this that visiting the graves of non-Muslims is also permissible, because visiting graves reminds a person of the Hereafter.

As it is mentioned in the hadith, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but now do visit them. Indeed, in visiting them there is a reminder (of death).” (Muslim, no. 977)

From the aforementioned hadith, it is also understood that it is not permissible to supplicate for non-Muslims. As Allah the Exalted says:
﴿مَا كَانَ لِلنَّبِيِّ وَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْ يَسْتَغْفِرُوا لِلْمُشْرِكِينَ وَلَوْ كَانُوا أُولِي قُرْبَى﴾ ()
“It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives.” (al-Tawbah: 113)
