Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up during a part of the night. He used the miswak, then came to the water-skin and performed ablution. Then I got up and performed ablution. The narrator said: I do not know whether he mentioned the use of the miswak. Then I stood on his left side, so he took hold of me and turned me to stand on his right side, and he began to pass his hand over my head. Then he prayed four rak‘ahs, then prayed the witr prayer, then he prayed the two rak‘ahs (sunnah) of Fajr, and then he went out for the Fajr prayer.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that two people can establish a congregation. It is permissible to perform a congregational prayer for voluntary (nafl) prayers. It is also understood that when two people are praying in congregation, the follower (muqtadi) should stand to the right of the imam. It is understood that if a person starts praying alone and later another person joins him, the intention for congregation (jama‘ah) can be made. It is also understood that minor movements during the prayer do not invalidate the prayer. In the mentioned narration, it is stated that four rak‘ahs were performed, and afterwards the witr prayer was offered. However, in Sahih al-Bukhari it is mentioned that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed the ‘Isha prayer, then returned home and after performing four rak‘ahs (of voluntary prayer), he went to sleep. Then he woke up and said: “This boy is still sleeping,” or he said something similar, then he (the Prophet) stood up (for prayer) and I (having performed ablution) stood on his left side. So he made me stand on his right side, and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed five rak‘ahs, then two, and then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went to sleep. (Bukhari, No: 117)
