It is narrated from Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand in the two rak'ahs before Fajr for a duration equal to the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that it is Sunnah to perform the two Sunnah units (rak‘ahs) of Fajr briefly. Performing them briefly means to shorten the standing (qiyam), recitation (qira’ah), and the bowing and prostration (ruku‘ and sujud). Imam Malik rahimahullah, keeping the above-mentioned hadith in view, has taken the position that in the Sunnah units of Fajr, only Surah al-Fatihah should be recited. However, this position of his is not correct, because other authentic ahadith make it clear that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to recite (other surahs) after al-Fatihah. As narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam recited (in the first Sunnah unit of Fajr) “Qul ya ayyuhal kafirun” and (in the second) “Qul huwa Allahu ahad.” (Muslim, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin, No. 726)
