Hadith 219

Tawoos (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is obligatory upon every adult person to thoroughly clean himself for the sake of Allah once every seven days, even if he is not in a state of major impurity. On Friday, he should wash his head and his body."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
Performing ritual bath (ghusl) for the Friday prayer on the day of Jumu‘ah is Sunnah. In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that it is a right upon every adult Muslim to perform ritual bath (ghusl) once in seven days. In another narration, it is stated: ((Ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah is obligatory upon every adult.)) (Bukhari, no. 858) ... “It is obligatory upon every adult to perform ritual bath (ghusl) on the day of Jumu‘ah.”

It is established from the narrations that due to difficult circumstances, the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) used to wear woolen garments in the summer, which caused them to sweat, and the odor of their sweat would spread in the mosque. So the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to them: ((If only you would purify yourselves for this day of yours.)) (Bukhari, no. 903; Muslim, no. 847) “If you would perform ritual bath (ghusl) on this day (it would be better).”

Taking these narrations into consideration, there is a difference of opinion among the jurists: Is the ritual bath (ghusl) of Jumu‘ah obligatory or not? The position of Allamah Ibn Hajar and Ibn Hazm (rahimahumallah) is that the ritual bath (ghusl) of Jumu‘ah is obligatory. (Fath al-Bari: 3/13; al-Muhalla bi’l-Athar: 1/255)

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) holds the view: The ritual bath (ghusl) of Jumu‘ah is recommended (mustahabb), however, for the one whose sweat causes an odor and this causes discomfort to the worshippers and the angels, then it is obligatory upon him. (al-Ta‘liq ‘ala Sabil al-Salam by Shaykh Abdullah Basam: 1/186)
