Hadith 213

اَخْبَرَنَا یَحْیَ بْنُ آدَمَ، نَا شَرِیْکٌ، عَنْ حُسَیْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِاللّٰهِ، عَنْ عِکْرِمَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: رَأَیْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللّٰهِ صَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلَیْهِ وَسَلَّمَ یُصَلِّیْ فِیْ ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ، یَتَّقِیْ بِفَضُوْلِهٖ حَرَّ الْاَرْضِ وَبَرْدِهَا.
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praying in a single garment, using its extra part to protect himself from the heat and cold of the ground.

From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that performing prayer (salah) in a single garment is permissible when there is hardship and two garments are not available. The method for this is as follows: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "When any one of you prays in a single garment, he should place the right edge of the sheet over his left shoulder and the left edge over his right shoulder." (Bukhari, Kitab al-Salah, no. 360; Abu Dawud, no. 627)
