Hadith 212

اَخْبَرَنَا اَبُو الْوَلِیْدِ، نَا زَائِدَةُ بْنُ قُدَامَةَ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عِکْرِمَةَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: کَانَ رَسُوْلُ اللّٰهِ صَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلَیْهِ وَسَلَّمَ یُصَلِّی عَلٰی (الْخَمُرَةِ).
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray on a mat made of palm leaves.

From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that prayer can be performed on a small mat, and this hadith also refutes those who claim that it is necessary for the ground to be made of earth for prostration. "Khumrah" refers to a small mat; it can be made of palm leaves or any other material. (Nayl al-Awtar: 2/129)
