Hadith 196

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever catches one rak'ah of the Asr prayer before sunset has caught that (Asr) prayer, and whoever catches one rak'ah of the Fajr prayer before sunrise and one rak'ah after the sun has risen, he has caught that (Fajr) prayer."

Benefits:
In another hadith, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amir al-Juhani radi Allahu anhu that he said: There are three times in which the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam forbade us from performing prayer or burying our deceased. When the sun is rising, at the exact time of noon until the sun declines, and when the sun is about to set until it has set. (Muslim, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin, no. 831; Sunan Abu Dawud, no. 3192)

The first narration is not contrary to the second narration; rather, it is prohibited to begin prayer during these times. If someone starts before sunrise or sunset, then even if the sun begins to rise or set during the prayer, he should continue and complete the prayer. This is the position of Imam Shafi'i and Imam Ahmad. However, Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah made a distinction between the dawn (fajr) and afternoon ('asr) prayers. His position is that this is correct for the 'asr prayer, but if someone begins the fajr prayer before sunrise and the sun rises during it, his prayer becomes invalid. (Kitab al-Umm by al-Shafi'i: 1/156; al-Mughni: 2/516)

However, the position of Imam Abu Hanifah rahimahullah is contrary to the explicit hadith.
