Hadith 195

Syedna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach us the Tashahhud in the same manner as he used to teach us a surah of the Qur'an.

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
In the aforementioned hadith, it is stated that the tashahhud was taught to us by the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in the same manner as a surah of the Noble Qur’an is taught. This means that it was taught with great care and attention. It is also understood from this that the tashahhud is obligatory (wajib), and which words of the tashahhud should be recited. The wording of the narration from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) is: ((At-tahiyyatu al-mubarakat as-salawatu at-tayyibat lillah. As-salamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu. As-salamu ‘alayna wa ‘ala ‘ibadillahis-salihin. Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.)) (Muslim, no. 403; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 973)

The wording of the narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) is: ((At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat. (Bukhari, no. 831; Muslim, no. 402; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 968)

As for which wording of the tashahhud is superior among these, the majority of scholars have considered the tashahhud of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) to be superior. Imam Shafi’i (rahimahullah) has considered the tashahhud of Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) to be superior. (Kitab al-Umm: 1/228; Subul as-Salam: 1/267)

Imam Muslim, Imam Tirmidhi, and Hafiz Ibn Hajar (rahimahumullah) have considered the tashahhud of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ud (radi Allahu anhu) to be more superior and better. (Subul as-Salam: 1/443; Sunan Tirmidhi, no. 289; Fath al-Bari: 2/368)

It is also understood from this hadith that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught the Companions (radi Allahu anhum) the ahadith in the same way as he taught the Qur’an. Therefore, the objection of the deniers of hadith that the teaching and learning of ahadith did not exist in the Prophetic era is false and rejected.
