Hadith 187

It is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) asked her about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): She replied: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray Tahajjud as much as Allah willed for him to pray, then when the time for Fajr prayer came, before leading it, he would pray two rak‘ahs, then he would go and lead the Fajr prayer. Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) asked her: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would return to you from the mosque, what would he do? She replied: "He would begin with the miswak (tooth-stick)."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that performing the two Sunnah units (rak‘ahs) before the Fajr prayer is superior and carries a great reward. In one hadith, it is narrated from Sayyidah A’ishah radi Allahu anha that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The two rak‘ahs (Sunnah) of Fajr are better than the world and all that it contains.” (Muslim, Kitab Salat al-Musafirin, No: 725)

➋ ... From the aforementioned hadith, the importance of the siwak (tooth-stick) can be gauged, as the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam used to use the siwak with great care. Its significance can also be understood from the fact that it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “If I had not feared hardship for my ummah—or (he said) for the people—I would have certainly commanded them to use the siwak before every prayer.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Jumu‘ah, No: 887; Muslim, No: 252)

It is thus understood that every Muslim should strive to use the siwak before every prayer. And it is narrated from Sayyidah A’ishah radi Allahu anha that the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and a means of earning the pleasure of the Lord.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Siyam, No: 1934; Sunan al-Nasa’i, Kitab al-Taharah, No: 5)
