Hadith 182

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "In prayer, for men it is to say 'Subhan Allah' (to alert the imam in case of forgetfulness or mistake), and for women it is to clap. And whoever makes such a gesture in his prayer that is understood (by others), then he must repeat his prayer." This is the last hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits

Benefits:
From the mentioned hadith, it is understood that if the imam makes a mistake during the prayer, then to alert him, men should say "Subhan Allah," and women can alert the imam by clapping. That is, by striking one hand on the back of the other hand.

This indicates that, without necessity, a woman's voice should not be heard by men. If a need arises, then its permissibility is established, just as the noble companions (radi Allahu anhum) would come to Lady Aisha (radi Allahu anha) and other Mothers of the Believers to ask about religious matters, and they would respond. However, in such a case, a woman is not permitted to speak in a soft or alluring manner.

The words at the end of the narration, "man ashaara fi salaatihi" ("whoever gestures in his prayer"), are not authentically established. (Sunan Abi Dawood, No. 944; Silsilat al-Da‘ifa, No. 1104)
