Syedna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with both of them) narrated: We used to memorize hadith only from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but when you started walking on hard and soft ground, then (trusting you) is a far-fetched matter.

Hadith Takhrij«
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: The meaning of the aforementioned hadith is that there was a time when:
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) says: “We used to accept upon hearing that this is a hadith of the Messenger.”
And Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) was young during the life of the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), but later, by hearing hadiths from the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum), he became one of those who narrated abundantly. However, he states: Since people began to narrate incorrect reports, we stopped listening to narrations altogether.
The wording in Sahih Muslim is: «لم نأخذ من الناس إلا ما نعرف .»[مقدمه مسلم] “We stopped listening except to those hadiths which we recognized.”
