Hadith 164

Narrated by Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "A woman, a dog, and a donkey (passing in front of a praying person) break the prayer, while something like the rear end of a saddle protects it."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that if there is a sutrah in front of the one praying, then no matter what passes in front, the prayer is not invalidated. And the minimum size of the sutrah is that it should be equal in height to the rear part of a camel’s saddle. Not in width, as is established from another hadith. The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Each one of you should place a sutrah in prayer, even if it is only an arrow.” (Silsilat al-Sahihah, no. 2783)

And using an animal as a sutrah is also established from the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). (Sahih Abu Dawud, no. 641)

Imam San‘ani (rahimahullah) says that this stick is equal to two-thirds of the forearm. (Subul al-Salam: 1/413)

The position of Qatadah (rahimahullah) is that it is one handspan and one palm’s length, as will be mentioned in the following hadith.
