Hadith 163

Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A blind man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have no guide to lead me to the prayer (in congregation)." So he requested the Prophet to grant him permission to pray at home. The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave him permission. When he turned to leave, the Prophet (peace be upon him) called him back and said: "Do you hear the call to prayer (adhan)?" He replied: "Yes." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Then come for the prayer."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
The mentioned hadith establishes the importance of performing prayer in congregation. Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah writes: From this hadith it is understood that when even a blind person is not given concession to leave the congregation, then for one who can see, it is even more so that there is no concession. (Fatawa Islamiyyah: 1/474)

Maulana Ubaidullah Mubarakpuri rahimahullah writes: The indication of the hadith regarding the individual obligation (wujub 'ayn) of congregation is clear; the one who abandons it is a sinful worshipper. (Mir'at al-Mafatih: 3/488)

It is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud that this blind Companion was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umm Maktum radi Allahu anhu. (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 553) The importance of prayer in congregation is established by many other authentic ahadith.

In another narration, it is mentioned that Sayyiduna ‘Itban bin Malik Salimi radi Allahu anhu was granted permission by the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to pray at home. (Sunan Ibn Majah, no. 754)

In "Hujjat Allah al-Balighah," Shah Waliullah rahimahullah has written that the reason Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umm Maktum radi Allahu anhu was not given concession was perhaps because his question pertained to the original ruling (azimah).
