Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
Regarding the aforementioned hadith, Allamah Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes that in order to bring out those who hide in their homes by abandoning the congregational prayer, the imam or his deputy is permitted to leave the congregation. (Fath al-Bari: 2/130)
Allamah ‘Ayni rahimahullah has derived several benefits from the aforementioned hadith:
➊ ... One should always precede a warning before administering punishment, because if reformation can be achieved through mere scolding or a light punishment, then that should suffice instead of imposing a severe punishment.
➋ ... For the sake of the truth, anyone can be removed from his house if he is hiding inside, and every possible means can be used to bring him out. Just as the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam intended to set fire (to their houses).
➌ ... One should hold the negligent criminal accountable. (‘Umdat al-Qari: 4/333, 334)
Allamah Abu Bakr al-Kasani al-Hanafi, in the context of the evidences for the obligation of congregational prayer, writes regarding this hadith: Such a warning is only given for abandoning an obligation. (Bada’i‘ al-Sana’i‘: 1/155)
Shaykh Ibn Baz rahimahullah writes: It is clear that a person who neglects a recommended act or a communal obligation (fard kifayah) cannot be reprimanded in this manner. (Fatawa Islamiyyah: 1/474)
Allamah Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes: Performing the prayer in congregation is an individual obligation (fard ‘ayn). The reason is that if congregational prayer were only a Sunnah, then the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would not have issued such a severe and wrathful warning for abandoning the congregation. And if it were a communal obligation (fard kifayah), then it would have sufficed for the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and those with him to fulfill this obligation together, and there would have been no need for such measures as calling people to prayer, appointing someone as imam, and threatening to set their houses on fire along with the people inside. In other words, there would have been no need to say such things.
After this, Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah states: For this reason, some jurists have deduced from this Prophetic statement that performing the prayer in congregation is an individual obligation (fard ‘ayn). Among the jurists who have deduced this from the hadith are ‘Ata’, al-Awza‘i, Ahmad, Abu Thawr, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Hibban, and Imam Bukhari rahimahumullah. (Fath al-Bari: 2/125, 129)
