Hadith 156

Ibn Abi Khalid narrated from his father, he said: I saw Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him), he performed the Fajr prayer and he would shorten it. I said: Abu Huraira! Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) use to pray like this? He said: Yes, even shorter than this.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that the imam should lead the congregation in a brief manner. Brief here means that he should avoid excessive length in recitation, bowing (ruku‘), prostration (sujud), and in the supplications and remembrances during the tashahhud.

It is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari from Sayyiduna Abu Mas‘ud al-Ansari radi Allahu anhu that a man said to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: “O Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam! I join the dawn (fajr) prayer late because so-and-so makes the fajr prayer very lengthy.” Upon this, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam became so angry that I had never seen him more angry in any admonition than on that day. Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “O people! Some of you are causing people to turn away (from prayer). So whoever among you leads the people in prayer should make it light, for behind him are the weak, the elderly, and those with needs.” (Bukhari, Kitab al-Adhan, no. 704)

When a person is alone, he may prolong the prayer as much as he wishes, as is established from (Bukhari, no. 703; Muslim, no. 467).
