Hadith 140

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "The callers to prayer will have the longest necks on the Day of Resurrection."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
The aforementioned hadith establishes the virtue of the mu’adhdhins (callers to prayer). In the Plain of Resurrection, they will be taller than other people, meaning their necks will be long, but they will not appear strange; rather, they will look beautiful, just as the neck of a camel is long and the camel is a beautiful animal. Some have interpreted the long necks as an indication of their greatness and status.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah has transmitted eight opinions of the hadith scholars regarding this:

➊ On the Day of Resurrection, people will be thirsty and, due to this, their necks will be bent. The callers to prayer (mu’adhdhins) will not be thirsty on that day, and their necks will be higher than those of the rest of the people.

➋ Their necks will be raised out of eagerness for their reward.

➌ Just as they used to raise their necks in this world to call the adhan (call to prayer) in a loud voice, likewise, on the Day of Resurrection, their necks will be raised and they will stand out among the rest of the people.

➍ When people are made to wear bridles of sweat, they will be safe from them.

➎ "A’naq" is the plural of "‘unuq," and its meaning is follower and companion. The meaning of the noble hadith is that their followers will be more than those of the general people, because all those who come after hearing their adhan will be with them.

➏ The meaning of "‘unuq" is deed, and the meaning of the noble hadith will be that their deeds will be more than those of the general people.

➐ On the Day of Resurrection, they will be the leaders of the people, because "tawil al-‘unuq" (one with a long neck) refers to a leader.

➑ Some scholars have read "a’naq" as "a’naq," and from this is "‘anaq," which is a term for a particular way of walking quickly, and the meaning of the noble hadith is that they will proceed towards Paradise with greater speed than the general people. (Nata’ij al-Afkar: 1/227)
