Hadith 132

أَخْبَرَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: لَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ يَعْلَمُ إِذَا شَهِدَ الصَّلَاةَ مَعِي خَيْرٌ لَهُ أَنْ يُدْعَى إِلَى شَاةٍ سَمِينَةٍ أَوْ سَمِينٍ يَفْعَلُ فَمَا لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ أَكْثَرُ.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "If any of you knew that when he prays with me, it is better for him than being called towards a fat, healthy goat or two fat, healthy goats, then he would surely do it (be present in the prayer). For what is in it is much greater for him."

From the aforementioned hadith, the virtue of congregational prayer (salah in jama‘ah) is established; among all things in the world, the most precious thing is congregational prayer. Muslims who abandon congregational prayer due to shopkeeping or business engagements should take a lesson from this hadith; in fact, some people do not even perform the prayer at all. In another hadith it is stated: “If a person were to find a bone or the foot of a fat animal, (this hypocrite would certainly come to obtain the bone by coming for the prayer), that is, the ‘Isha prayer.” (Muslim, Kitab al-Masajid, Chapter: The Virtue of Congregational Prayer)
