Hadith 122

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace be upon him) said: "If you would not neglect, I would have commanded you to use the miswak at the time of every prayer."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
It is narrated in Sahih Bukhari from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: ((If I had not feared hardship for my ummah or for the people, I would have commanded them to use the siwak (tooth-stick) with every prayer.)) (Bukhari, no. 887) ... "If I had not feared hardship for my ummah or for the people, I would have commanded them to use the siwak for every prayer."

It is understood from this that using the siwak for every prayer is legislated (mashru‘), not obligatory (wajib). It is also understood that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was extremely compassionate and merciful towards his ummah. One should strive to use the siwak before every prayer, because using the siwak increases the reward. As Sayyidah Aishah radi Allahu anha said: The prayer performed after using the siwak is increased seventy times over the prayer performed without using the siwak. (Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 137)

Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai rahimahullah has declared this narration to be hasan li ghayrihi (good due to corroborating chains) based on various supporting evidences. (Tashil al-Wusul ila Takhrij Ahadith Salat al-Rasul, p. 82)
