Hadith 119

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a garden in Makkah or Madinah, and he heard the voices of two people who were being punished in their graves. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are being punished, but they are not being punished for a major sin: one of them used to spread gossip, while the other did not protect himself from urine." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a fresh date palm branch, split it into two, and placed one piece on each grave. He was asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Why did you do this?" He replied: "Perhaps their punishment will be lessened as long as these do not dry out."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
➊ From the aforementioned ahadith, it is understood that the punishment of the grave is a reality; this is why the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to seek refuge from the punishment of the grave in prayer: ((Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhab al-qabr)) etc. Regarding the reason for the punishment, he said: "They were not major sins." This absolutely does not mean that they were minor sins; rather, it means that in their view, these sins were not considered major—they regarded them as insignificant. Or it means that if they had exercised even a little caution, they could have avoided both of these actions, but they did not abstain from them. Regarding the tale-bearer, it is stated that he will not enter Paradise.

➋ ... He did not conceal himself while urinating. The wording in Sunan Abi Dawud is: ((la yastanzihu min al-bawl)) "He did not protect himself from urine." This is also the intended meaning here. (Abu Dawud, no. 20)
It is understood from this that one should protect oneself from urine splashes and sit in privacy while urinating. Not protecting oneself from urine splashes and urinating without covering oneself are causes of the punishment of the grave.
