Hadith 104

Lubabah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) and seated him in his lap, and he urinated on him. So I said: O Messenger of Allah! Give me your lower garment so that I may wash it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The urine of a girl is washed, and water is sprinkled over the urine of a boy."

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits:
From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that the ruling regarding the urine of a boy and a girl during the age of breastfeeding is different. If a breastfeeding boy urinates on the clothes, it is not necessary to wash the clothes, but if a girl does so, the clothes must be washed. This also refutes the position of the Hanafis and Malikis who say: It is necessary to wash the clothes soiled by the urine of both a breastfeeding boy and girl. However, sprinkling water suffices only as long as the child is content with milk. Sayyiduna Qatadah rahimahullah says: This ruling remains as long as both do not eat food. When they start eating food, then the urine of both must be washed. (Sunan Abi Dawud, No: 378)

What is the wisdom behind the concession of sprinkling water on the urine of a breastfeeding child? The real wisdom is known only to Allah, the Possessor of Majesty. However, in Sunan Ibn Majah, Abu al-Yaman al-Misri narrates that he asked Imam Shafi‘i rahimahullah regarding the aforementioned prophetic hadith (in which the ruling is that) water should be sprinkled on the urine of a boy and the clothes should be washed from the urine of a girl. (He asked: What is the reason for this difference when) both urines are the same thing? Imam Shafi‘i rahimahullah replied: The reason is that the urine of a boy is from water and clay, and the urine of a girl is from flesh and blood. Then he said: Do you understand? I said: No. He said: When Allah Ta‘ala created Adam alayhis salam, (He created him from clay and water, and) Hawwa alayha salam was created from his small rib, so it is as if the urine of a boy comes from water and clay, and the urine of a girl comes from flesh and blood. Now do you understand? I said: Yes. He said: May Allah grant you benefit from this (knowledge and understanding). (Sunan Ibn Majah, No: 525)
