Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil bin Abi Talib narrated: I went to Sayyida Rubayyi’ bint Mu’awwidh bin ‘Afra’ (may Allah be pleased with her), so she said: Who are you? I said: I am Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Aqil. She asked: Who is your mother? I said: Raytah bint Ali or so-and-so bint Ali. She said: Nephew! Welcome. I said: I have come to you to ask about the ablution of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). She said: Yes, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to come to us, and he performed ablution from this vessel, or a vessel like it, and it is about the size of a mug (approximately ten chittank). He washed both hands, then rinsed his mouth, cleaned his nose, and washed his face three times, then washed his hands three times each, then wiped his head twice, wiped the inner and outer parts of his ears, then washed his feet three times each. Then she said: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to me and asked me about this hadith, so I informed him, and he said: People only accept washing, while we find wiping in the Book of Allah, that is, regarding the feet.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Abdush Shakoor Tirmidhi
Benefits: ➊ In the aforementioned hadith, it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed ablution (wudu) with a measure of water equal to a mudd. A mudd is a measure that is approximately equal to two ratl, and according to modern weight, it is about 600 grams. The purpose of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) using such a small amount of water for ablution was to encourage the ummah to avoid wasting water.
➋ ... From the aforementioned hadith, it is understood that, apart from the head, washing the remaining limbs three times each is recommended (mustahabb). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) that: ((The Messenger of Allah performed ablution once, once.)) (Bukhari, no. 157; Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 138) ... “The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed ablution by washing each limb once.”
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Zayd (radi Allahu anhu): ((Indeed, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed ablution twice, twice.)) (Bukhari, Book of Ablution, no. 158; Sunan Tirmidhi, no. 32) ... “The Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed ablution by washing each limb twice.”
In the above-mentioned hadith, there is mention of washing three times.
Imam Nawawi (rahimahullah) writes: Washing once is obligatory (fard), while washing the limbs of ablution three times is, by consensus, Sunnah. (Sharh Muslim by Nawawi: 2/108)
However, it is not permissible to wash more than three times. As narrated from Sayyiduna Amr ibn Shu'ayb from his father from his grandfather: A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and began to ask questions, so the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) demonstrated ablution to him by washing three times and said: “This is ablution, and whoever does more than this has done badly, transgressed, and wronged.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, no. 135)
At the end of the aforementioned hadith, the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (radi Allahu anhuma) regarding wiping over the feet is not established by any authentic hadith. Rather, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (radi Allahu anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to a Bedouin: “Perform ablution as Allah has commanded you,” then he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) taught him the method of ablution, and in it, the feet are to be washed. (Sahih Ibn Majah, no. 539)
The position of the majority is that washing the feet is obligatory. (Nayl al-Awtar: 1/261)
